What is American Gambler?

I’m currently working on my second book, tentatively called American Gambler, for FSG. The book is about how the sports gambling industry grew in America from the middle of the twentieth century to today, focusing on the gamblers and bookmakers who operated in the shadows and were later shoved aside by corporate behemoths. As I research, report and write this book, I will post occasional updates and dispatches here, as well as produce a weekly podcast where I talk to friends and other special guests about the books I am reading along the way.

Why should I subscribe?

You can subscribe and read my posts and listen to the podcast for free. You can pay for a subscription if you want to help support the work I’m doing and get invites to special events like the IRL book club or livestreams. You can become a founding member if you want a signed copy of my book and signed copies of books of my guests.

What was Letter From Hot Springs and what happened to it?

Back in 2016 I moved my family of five from Brooklyn, New York to the small town of Hot Springs, Arkansas to write a book. I started Letter from Hot Springs as a way to send regular updates on our life and on the progress of the book to friends and family. You may have been subscribed to that. I simply changed the name of the newsletter to American Gambler, and I’m hoping to do something similar with this newsletter that I did with Letter From Hot Springs. Honestly I think I’ll do even more.
